Weekend, Races, and Such.

Stay tuned for a race report in the next couple of days. Spencer and I are going to Rome, GA to do this weekend’s Ga Cup. Plus, they have 2/3 races: so we’re hoping for some good results.

Oh and check this out. Podium. From last weekend.

On another note Wes and I both did the BMW performance center crit last night. He hung tough for a few laps in the pro/1/2/3 before getting popped (really not a bad performance considering he did the masters/junior race earlier in the night). I unfortunately did not make either break–really didn’t feel very good (maybe a product of not riding since Tuesday after the Orr Rd pileup??) and was pretty gassed when they went. But I felt a bit better later on the last lap, countered an attack, and held the field off for 7th. Made me feel like I sorta redeemed myself anyway. Anyway, it was a quality field–good enough that Boyd Johnson (of DLP) only got 2nd–and Zac Lake of Laketraining/Stockman Oil got 6th (I haven’t actually seen the official results yet–these two and mine are the only placings that I know.)

Hit up DT G-Vegas afterwards—-only ok. Greenville isn’t necessarily all that it’s cracked up to be. Or, at least, I didn’t think so. Bit boring really.

Oh and check this out: secyclingnews.com . It’s a website (only just beginning) devoted to the Southeastern Racing scene (and founded by a friend and collegiate teammate of mine). Great idea really!! I think that it’s really going somewhere. On another note I offered to have our team post a diary on the site (as he has a few other riders doing)…it’s a great way to get our name out their.

p.s. today has sucked–got a flat tire while doing a recovery ride on the tt bike (1/2 inch gash). Had no tube, and noone around to give me a ride. So I had to ride the 3.5 or so miles home on a flat rear on the (already) squirrelly tt bike. Driftin’ son!

Interesting Times

So this last weekend of racing was pretty fun. I went to the LaGrange Ga Cup with my roommate who, I might add, did his FIRST bike race EVER. And this held true to the normal formula–almost everybody gets annihilated in their first race: you don’t know how to train, race, etc… and in Jonas’ case he failed to get into his pedal quickly and was off the back from the beginning. But he held on for a few laps chasing before finally popping. All in all a good effort…he found it pretty motivating..if disappointing to get dropped in said manner.

My weekend fortunately went a little better…I got 3rd overall in the 2/3 GC for the stage race (was a little disappointed b/c I lost the TT by a small margin when I didn’t bring the TT bike and was less than attentive to a few time bonuses up the road). Still it was a fairly good result. And I picked up 9th in the pro/1/2 crit and 4th in the 2/3 RR on Sunday (very pleasing since I attacked a little too far out in the bunch sprint in the last K–4 guys had about 5 seconds going into the last K and I tried to jump past them and the field..and just went from a little too far out for the win–but you have to take risks to win–and settled for holding onto 4th). All said though it was pleasing b/c of the upgrade points…

Oh and we hit up AthFest on Saturday night…but I won’t mention that sort of drunken debauchery on this blog (oops). (disclaimer: not actually a real photo–or not one that I took anyway.) Not the best idea before racing but staying with Caroline (big thanks for the bed btw) was way way preferable to car camping in Lagrange. And of course J and I then had to go out with a bunch of cycling friends.

Anyway, stay tuned for some photos of the weekend..which was followed up with surf-ski paddling and beach-boozing at Hartwell on Sunday night after the race. Pretty much as good as a weekend can get: bike racing, fun, and good results.

Settlers Life Omn. photos

So here are a e a couple of photos from the Settlers Life Omnium…I thought that I had more (but was mistaken). My batteries ran out pretty promptly (hence there only being two shots.\

Anyway, it’s not such a great photo of Spencer and myself…we were both pretty wrecked after riding back from the race (an additional 30 miles in 95 degrees with a headwind) with Chris Sheehan–who was kind enough to take a photo. And it looks like someone forgot to put on sunscreen…ie the sweet helmet sunburn. haha

And the second photo is of the house where we stayed on Saturday night…unfortunately the flash didn’t really penetrate the darkness very well. But, rest assured, it was a pretty SWEET house.

So I went to the doctor this morning after two days of being sick (read: swollen tonsils, sore throat, general malaise, etc…). He took a look at my swollen tonsils and symptoms and promptly gave me some antibiotics.

His prescription described it as pharyngitis and he hooked me up with a z-pak for it. Hopefully this will do the trick but it better work quick with the state u23 race only two days away. At the moment I’d be pretty useless–rather feel like I was hit by a small vehicle (vespa perhaps?). But I’m going to play by ear and hope things get better and will probably race regardless.

Anyway I’ll keep ya’ll posted…and for that matter get in touch with Ethan about the situation as soon as BSC is open.

Busy Weekend

So I had a pretty full weekend doing the Settlers Life Omnium in TN this weekend. Spence and I did the Roan Groan RR on Saturday-which was REALLY REAlly hard. It was only 55 miles or so long but ended with a 7 mile climb (not to mention the 95 degree heat). I think we both operated under the assumption that “Oh it’s only 55 miles; I only need two bottles…”. We were so wrong…I was unbelievably dehydrated at the finish..whereupon after a cooler spilling there was no water (until they later went and refilled it).

Anyway, Spencer–after a good ride– pulled a top twenty finish and I was just outside of the top-twenty. Personally, I was pretty disappointed in my ride–I was in the lead chase group of 5 riders or so with Brookwalter (of BMC) setting a fast pace…then about 2.5 miles into the climb Scott Stewart (of VMG I think) attacked and I popped. The rest of the climb was pretty miserable…I was really glad to finish it up.

The crit the next day went better (aside from some road rash and inflexible (and unreasonable british usa cycling officials). Don’t even get me started about them. But I sincerely hope that they, on the off chance, happen across this. Quite frankly, they were terrible at their job, inflexible, and are (according to the race organizer Renault (spelling??; also incidentally a very nice guy–put on a good race weekend) not being invited back to officiate next year.

Anyway, a big thanks to Chris Sheehan for putting Spencer and Reid up on Friday night and offering up a place to stay. Chris, incidentally, had a good weekend racing the masters—we all know how fast he was and is despite not having much time to train. And to Andrew Raab for hooking some of us (Reid, Alder, Diego, and myself) with a place to stay on Saturday…we stayed at a “cabin” in Boone that was incredible. In the manner that those places often turn out to be.

Stay tuned for a few pictures from the weekend when I manage to find both my camera and upload cable (both are somewhere in the Echo–which I might add tore up some mountain roads this weekend…I was struggling just to keep up with Andrew on the mountain roads–he was ripping it). But I only have a couple since it, unfortunately, ran out of batteries after only a few pictures.

This is unreal. I saw this article on the BBC and it is totally unreal. It talks about an uncontacted indigenous tribe in Brazil…they took photos of them from the air to prove their existence (I guess that they’re in a very, very remote region of the rain forests there…anyway these people went so far as to largely disappear after seeing the plane. Later, on another pass, the men were painted up and went so far as to aim and fire arrows at the aircraft.

I mean can you imagine seeing an airplane and not having a clue as to what it is… “What is that man?” “I don’t know…some kinda giant bird.”

Anyway, check out the article….CRAZY.
